Sometimes in life, things happen for a reason and sometimes in life, things happen for no reason. I find myself questioning the timing of things like: the timing of love, the timing of losing friends and the timing of my breakdowns. Am I the one who pre-plans when I'm going to outgrow those around me? Do i self-sabotage those around me so that I can choose who enters and exits my life to fit my needs and mentally plan for missing people? I realize these thoughts are likely going to be someone's reason for referring me to a therapist, but I am serious. Do we pre-plan out when people leave our lives? Almost like the second we see an ounce of trouble, we automatically prepare for their exit, emotionally detaching the second it is convenient for our calendar.
The biggest and most important question is how do you know when it's time to change? Are there signs? Does someone who looks like your parent fall from the sky and say 'hello, you are a hot mess, get your life together"? Obviously the answer is no, I have found that often times, you hit a wall or a wall hits you and it's usually at a very inconvenient time where everything just seems to not be going well all at once. You begin to get frustrated with everything and are convinced that "life is against you", when really, this is life telling you something needs to change; either your environment or your job or your social circle or your habits.
Self-reflection is so important for so many different reasons but especially to recognize when it is time to change habits, behaviors or things that are inhibiting your growth. If you continuously stay the same person with the same bad habits, you are the only person to blame. Self-reflection and knowing when and what to change is even more important on your journey to growth. It takes a strong person to reflect internally and address what needs to change in order to get to where you want to be.
Here are 7 Signs that it's time for self-reflection and change:
You feel 'stuck' in life and find no real meaning to every day tasks
You are using negative coping mechanisms to 'escape' from reality on the weekends
At the end of every day you are emotionally and physically drained
You are no longer growing as a person
Those around you make you feel small or don't challenge you to be the best version of yourself
Your goals feel unattainable or too far out of reach
You feel like everything keeps emotionally triggering you
